Who are under achiever students?
Being a teacher and teacher educator I observed that these students have specific characteristics. Their copy work, result of summative assessments and classroom performance evidenced that they,

  • Do not perform well in summative assessments.
  • Are less attentive in class that shows their less motivation towards learning.
  • Show careless attitude towards assign tasks. Either do not do or do inappropriate work.
  • Often give lame excuses for incomplete tasks.
  • Have no or little self confidence to present their work in-front of class.
These characteristics are also endorsed by different researchers for instance Dr. Sylvia Rimm that these students remain less attentive during lessons and show irresponsibility.

Enabling underachievers:
The important question is how a student becomes careless and poor performer?  I believe they must not be by birth except in few cases. So, who is responsible, the child’s parents or teachers? Since both play a vital role in child’s life therefore,  negligence of any one of them could spoil a child.

Hence, it is critical to get a clear understanding of the obstacles that impact these children’s education so that successful measurements could be taken.
