Why Do Students Underachieve?

Identifying Underachiever Students:

Identifying underachievers is apparent since there is a considerable gap between their ability and their achievements in school. Commonly underachieving children do not have specific physical or learning disabilities yet their academic performance is significantly below although they are capable of doing.

Causes of Underachievement:

Following are some probable reasons for underachieving. These include both home and school causes of underachievement.

Afraid to fail:

Underachievers can be perfectionists who associate their value with what they produce. Perfectionists are usually afraid to fail therefore, they try to do things faultlessly, but in the process may not finish, or turn in assignments.

Delayed bloomers:

Some children grown-up more slowly than others. These children take a little longer to decide that doing well in school is something they really want. Early health problems can also be a risk factor.

Parental Negligence:

Inappropriate behavior of parents is a key source of
underachieving. A most dangerous reason of student underachievement is parents' lack of support for schools and teachers.

High achiever Sibling:

If a child has a super achiever sibling, they may create the place of underachiever.

Require Additional Support:

Some children just need additional concentration of parents and teachers to become confident about their abilities in particular subjects.

Family Issues:

Some underachieving children might be facing crises at home such as a Mom or Dad losing their job, a divorce, a death in the family. At school teachers must be well aware of the child’s family issues.

Maltreatment at School:

A small number of children might be stressed because they are being bullied or made fun of at school. As a result they can lose all motivation to perform academically and participate in class.

Having no vision:

Visions or dreams stimulate children to perform well and keep on striving for best. If they do not have a dream for their future, they might not understand the value of achievement. They must have a goal in mind for their future so this goal guides their efforts and they could reach to their destiny.
Only the intrinsic motivation for learning in a child could help him achieve the victories.
